Social Awareness Project

Day #1 October 21st
This story isn't really about social awareness it is a story of how examples of this ruin our us and we need to do something more about this story. This story was about a kid who was attacked for being gay. This story said the charges for this kids who attacked him. I think that this is sad that people think like this. Why is it ok for people to attack or even make fun o people for liking the same sex, it doesn't make them not human. I don't think it is ok that poeple think like that, because we live in a world now that people shouldn't treat other people with a different respect because they don't have the same feelings. I think our world should do something about all this attacking to gay people because it isn't fair to them, being arrested isn't enough!

Day #2, October 22nd
Today I found something about Autism and how people are realizing this is something that is growing and they want to talk about it. The kids and or adults that had autism were there with there care givers and the president of Staten Island was telling them that they weren't alone and that there were people all around them that cared for them. I think that this one spoke to me because it say's that no matter your differences there is always other people like you and you are never alone. I think it was smart for the president to hold something like this because I think that people think there different and they feel uncomfortable with themselves and this made them feel better about themselves.

Day #3: October 23rd
In the New York Times today i read about a story that told you what was in energy drinks. Some energy drinks have alcohol in them. This makes parent aware of what there kids have been drinking. It even said something about red bull. It is said that these drinks are very dangerous and the amount of kids buying them has grown rapidly this Summer. I think this is a bad thing but a good thing. A bad thing because nobody knew how much caffeine was in red bull. 76 milligrams in a 8.3 ounce red bull is how much caffeine is it. That is digusting! This is a good thing because it is making parents aware of what their kids might be drinking. I mean it might not be good to kids who get addicted to this drinks but it is good for their parents to be aware about how dangerous they might be.

Day #4: October 24th
On the news today while I was watching it before I left to go to school, there was a new report on how people with MS should take yoga. They say that yoga can help it but it probably won't be a cure to MS, it makes the clients feel better and stretch and relax. There is a specific person that works at a yoga shop espically for people with MS and she helps them. They have a organization where they take money and with that money they buy equipment for the clients with MS. I thought this was very interesting because I know someone with MS, and I actually asked her if she ever thought of doing yoga, she said that she once tried it and it helped. She said it had relaxed her and sometimes she would even forget that she had MS it felt so relaxing. She did have to stop though because it became harder for her to go there. This story had really help me learn something about MS because before that I didn't really understand MS but now it just made me aware about people who have MS aren't going to stop their lives because they have a disability, they're going to keep going like the poem "Mother to Son" was saying.

Day #5: October 25th
Today on the news today I found something about New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman donating thousands of dollar to charity. Scheiderman got his money from deducting money from work expenses. He had doing his deductions for 200 days when he was not in the Senate Chamber or in Albany. He is donating his tax savings money to a charity, he could be giving that charity at least 10,000 dollars. He is hoping this will clean up Albany. Well i got 2 things out of this story. From my point of view  I thought this was a very good thing.  I thought it was good for 1 reason is because he is giving so much money to a charity, and that is such a good and helpful thing. Another reason because not only is he giving thousands of money to a charity he is also getting business taxes off things, and that has been a big issue for a lot of people.

Entry #8 "Mother to son"

When I first read "Mother to son" by Langston Hughes I didn't really understand it. I thought it was about a mom just talking to her son about getting through one thing in life but as I read it more than once, it was about life in general.
The mom in this case is telling her son that her life was hard but everyone has to get through it sometime. "Life ain't for me no crystal stair" she tells her son. "So boy don't turn back," she says later. She is telling him that life is hard but everything has to get through it.
This poem really stood out to me and it really spoke out to me. The mom was telling her son that life isn't easy and it isn't just bridge that you can walk over, theres splinters and tacks. I think that this poem is really different form his other ones that i have read by Langston Hughes and it really changes the way i think of life. It told me that everyone has days or even lives that bad things happen in them and you just have to keep going and not look back. Don't ever sit down and give up, stand up and keep going. Life doesn't guide you, you guide your own life.

Apreciation

Stuart Little was filled with adventure on every page. Page after page there was a new adventure that pulls you in, so your right there in the story. When my mom read this book to me for this time, I would jump up and down or bite my nails, depending on the mood E.B White set in the book.
Stuart Little is a brother and a son to the Little’s. He is treated like a normal human being to his family. except those minor times when Stuart is exceptionally small and can go places humans can’t. Stuart lives a normal life until he meets a bird named Margalo. Margalo is a bird that fell into the Littles home. Stuart treats Margalo like a sister. He gives her a place to sleep and cares for her, and gives her everything she needs. A few days past and they had already made an amazing friendship and Margalo leaves because she gets a letter that says "Beware of the cat." Margalo gets very frightened and leaves. Once Margalo left, Stuart started to get worried, Stuart sets out on an adventure to find her.
When Stuart leaves the Little’s house it’s not the first time he is going out on an adventure, but it is the first time he is leaving without permission and not returning for a long time or ever. Stuart even says “Good-by beautiful home,” he whispers “I wonder if I will ever see you again.”” In my mind at this part I could tell that Stuart eyes were probably watery and his head was down. I mean he is a small mouse and he loves his family very much, so him leaving and not knowing if he will see them again is a big deal. White makes you feel like your right there when Stuart is saying goodbye to his home and you almost feel that he is saying goodbye to you as if you were the home.
At this part I was really excited because to me this is when the book really began. There were other episodes before this but this one really stood out to me. This is when the adventure finally begins.
There are three main adventures in this book that change Stuart as a character.
The first one is when he is actually leaving his home. This is not only an upscale for Stuart it was also one for me, as the reader. I couldn't believe what was going on. I was shocked even though I knew it was coming. Stuart leaving his home maybe forever is a big step for a little mouse in a big world. I won't even go in the world by myself yet so in this case I think that me and Stuart are a lot different then I thought we were. I look up to Stuart in this part though, because if it were me and I had lost a friend that was very close I don't think I would be able to just leave like he did, it shows that he really cares for Margalo and I wish I could just leave somewhere if my friend were in danger, but I could never.
The second adventure that I LOVE is when Stuart finds Harriet. To me this part is my favorite part. You get your mind off Margalo for a bit and you meet a new character that reminds you so much of a Barbie. Her description was “Harriet is young and she is quite pretty. She is considered one of the best dressed girls in this town, too. All her clothes are tailored specially for her." She is also the height of a Barbie and I think it was cute to have a character look or feel like a Barbie in the text. She's such a magical character to put in a book like this, because so many children who are reading are probably into Barbies. I really like the adventure here because Stuart like freaks out because he really likes her and everything goes wrong. In the end she tries to help him, she tries to help the disatster because she doesn’t really mind it. Stuart being the mouse he is freaks out because it isn't perfect and Harriet ends up leaving Stuart, and Stuart then realizes it was his fault for her leaving when they didn't even need what he planed. This isn't really an adventure in the book but it is a time Stuart goes through realization of something, and what makes this scene so magical is Harriet because of her features.
The last adventure suprinsingly is the last page and a cliff hanger just like E.B Whites other book Charlottes Web. I feel like the whole book leads up to the last page. The whole book was foreshadowing the last page in some way. It starts a whole new adventure, because he hadn’t found Margalo yet so he was setting out again after he had just had his date with Harriet. “But the sky was bright and he somehow felt he was headed in the right direction.” That was the last sentence. The book had just began but yet just ended.
So don't let me tell you every juicy detail of every adventure in the book, just pick the book up and let the writing stir you into the mind of the mouse.

Entry # 7

To dig deeper in my reading of Stuart Little I looked at history for E.B White and other sources that had to do with the book.
One source I came upon was edhelper an online website that told me a little bit of the past of E.B White. What i found interesting is that it says that his house was filled with banging cans and loudness and banging on the piano, and there is a scene in Stuart Little where Stuart is in the piano trying to help the Littles and that there is always banging cans in the book and so he related it to his family when he was younger.
Another source was E.B White's Life. This talks about how he as a person grows as a writer, and the adventure that life took him to get him where he is now. I think his life really goes with Stuarts because he goes for what he shoots as a determined person but also goes through those life issues that also need to be saved.
Another source is Biography and it also talks about his life as a child and how he started to grow. I thought this one was interesting because one if his inspirations was his niece because he usually wrote articles and essays but then his first book she wrote was Stuart Little followed by Charlottes Web. It really helped me understand the way the books go together.
The last source is amazon. Stuart Little was actually born from the mom in the book and what i find interesting is that in the movie if i clearly remember she adopts him as a baby. This website made me notice that this book was mainly about growing up and going out the first time alone, and that the whole book is a life lesson, like going out on your own never said it wasnt going to be hard but is always going to you get you somewhere and you will earn something from it. Stuart and E.B White take you on a never ending adventure and it really is never ending because the ending is unclear so it is for you to find out!

Stuart Little An Interesting Thought "The descriptions and Pictures describe Stuart"

Stuart in Stuart Little is a very brave, special, adventurous, caring and curious mouse. Since the beginning of the book even the first sentence explain Stuarts love for him family and his love for adventure. Through out the whole book Stuart is traveling. Either he is searching for something for him or doing something that a mouse regualary don't do. On page 56 Stuart is shooting a bow and arrow towards a cat Snowbell and in his structure and his face he look so concentrated. If i was a mouse i would never shoot a bow and arrow to a cat, they love to feast on mice and what if the bow and arrow didn't work he would be dead.
Stuart towards the middle of the book goes on an adventure to find his friend Margalo that is a bird and is flying somewhere. Stuart is determined to find her and throughout the rest of the book, he is willing to do anything at anytime.
In some way I think I relate to Stuart. He is a mouse that will go anywhere for a friend, I am the same way. Once there was a time when my friend was moving somewhere else and i thought i would never see her again, so i went to the parents and sit them down and told them how i felt about them moving. I also started to unpack the girls bag because she was my closest friend there and i didn't want her leaving.
Stuart's first friend was leaving him and he left to go find her. If i was Stuart i would do the same thing! Stuart is a great friend and he is polite so i would love to have him as a friend.
